Porcelain and ceramic floor tile for the rooms that take water, salt and boots, laid flat on a prepared base with grout lines you can sight down.
A tile floor is only as good as what sits under it. Most of the tile failures people call us about, cracked pieces, hollow spots, edges that catch a sock, come from the base rather than the tile. So that is where we start, and that is what we price openly.
Tile is the floor for rooms that get wet, gritty or both. In a Toronto house that usually means four places:
For bedrooms and living areas, a wood or vinyl plank floor is often warmer underfoot and easier on the budget. We will tell you if that is the better call.
| Ceramic | Porcelain | |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Softer, more porous | Dense, very low water absorption |
| Best for | Bathrooms and kitchens with light traffic | Entries, basements, busy kitchens |
| Cutting | Easier | Slower, harder on blades |
| Publicly quoted Toronto range, installed (October 2026) | $7 to $14 per sq ft | $9 to $18 per sq ft |
Those ranges come from published Toronto sources, not from us. Your own price is set on your written, itemized quote after we measure.
Big porcelain, 24 x 24, 24 x 48 and larger, gives a calm floor with few grout lines. It is also unforgiving. A large tile will not bend to follow a dip, so the floor has to be flat across the whole piece. We check with a long straightedge, level where needed, back-butter each tile and use a clip levelling system so neighbouring edges sit at the same height. Publicly quoted Toronto ranges for large format porcelain seen in October 2026 sat at $13 to $18 per sq ft installed.
A heated mat turns a cold January bathroom or basement into somewhere you are happy to stand barefoot. The mat is laid over the prepared base, tested for resistance before it is covered, tested again after tiling, and connected to a thermostat. We list the mat, the thermostat and the electrical work separately so the cost is clear. Mat brands we install: [CONFIRM].
Tile jobs are where the “we found something under the old floor” phone call usually happens. Our quote includes a named levelling allowance [CONFIRM], and if the base needs more than that we stop, send photos and wait for your written OK. Cutting is done outside or in the garage where possible [CONFIRM], and the room is vacuumed at the end of every day. Read more about how we work.
If water has already damaged a nearby wood floor, our floor repair crew can fix that in the same visit. Planning a condo bathroom? See condo and commercial flooring for how we handle building rules.

We check the subfloor for flatness, bounce and moisture, because tile shows every flaw underneath it. Whatever we find goes on the quote as its own line.
We plan where the cuts land so you do not end up with a thin sliver at the door or along the most visible wall, and we confirm the layout with you before any mortar is mixed.
Levelling, an uncoupling membrane or cement board as the floor needs, and a heated mat set in place and tested before it is covered, if you chose one.
Tiles are back-buttered where the size calls for it and set with a levelling system on large format. Grout goes in once the thinset has cured.
Grout is sealed where the product needs it, the room is cleaned, and we walk the floor with you and write down anything that needs another look.
Every quote is written and itemized, so you can see where each dollar goes. These are the things that move the number.
Large format pieces such as 24 x 48 need a flatter base, more mortar coverage and two people per tile, so they cost more to lay than standard sizes.
Porcelain is denser and harder to cut than ceramic. Both the material price and the labour time differ.
Self-levelling, membrane, cement board or repairs to a soft wood subfloor. This is where most tile budgets move, so it is itemized separately.
Lifting old tile and its mortar bed takes far longer than pulling up carpet or a click floor.
The mat, the thermostat and the electrical connection are separate lines, so you can see what the warmth adds.
Herringbone, diagonal layouts, many corners, a toilet flange or a floor drain all add cutting time.
Publicly quoted Toronto ranges seen in October 2026 run about $7 to $14 per sq ft installed for ceramic, $9 to $18 for porcelain, and $13 to $18 for large format porcelain, with labour alone quoted at $5 to $8. These are market figures, not our prices. Your written quote is based on your room, your tile and what the base needs.
Big tiles need a very flat floor, full mortar coverage on the back of each piece and careful handling. A slight hump that a small tile would ride over leaves a large tile rocking or with a raised edge, so more preparation goes in first.
Yes. An electric mat is set under the tile in a thin layer of mortar and tested before and after the tile goes down. The electrical hookup is done by a licensed electrician [CONFIRM].
It can be, since porcelain shrugs off damp. We take moisture readings on the slab first and fix low spots and cracks, because tile set over a moving or uneven slab is what cracks later.
Usually the next day for light foot traffic once the grout has set, with heavier use a little later. We give you the exact times for the products used on your job in writing.
